We’re proud to announce that Tioga is now an official brownfield consulting firm in the state of Mississippi. The approval allows us to complete all phases of Environmental Site Assessments and remediation for brownfields. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality defines “brownfields” as property that undergoes expansion, redevelopment or reuse that may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. The Environmental Protection Agency started the Brownfield Program to responsibly assess, safely clean up and sustainably reuse contaminated properties.
Brownfield certification allows Tioga to conduct Phase I and Phase II assessments, site cleanups and remediation. Registration to the Brownfield Program allows a prospective owner to remove liability from any contamination at a property due to past activities provided the prospective owner is not responsible for the contamination. Our team can represent the landowner to coordinate with the MDEQ and fulfill any state required environmental assessment or remediation.
Assessments normally include collecting samples throughout the property such as its soil, vapor and groundwater. Data analyzed from the samples can evaluate potential human health and ecological risks. If risks are found, Tioga team members are also specialized in site remediation. Remediation can include pump and treat, remedial excavation, bioremediation, soil vapor excavation and injection.
Environmental assessments and remediation are essential to any brownfield site. Tioga has been performing brownfield assessments and remediation for several sites across Tennessee and most recently, in Arkansas. We’re excited to expand these services across the border into Mississippi. Learn how we cleaned up the site of a former industrial facility in Arkansas that contained contamination from petroleum and other hazardous materials.
