October 18th marked the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act being approved by Congress. This act regulates pollution in our nation's waterways and has made a drastic difference in the quality of our rivers. This act provided a way for the EPA to establish waste water treatment standards and surface water quality standards. This is the reason that we now monitor the storm water runoff from industrial facilities and create Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans.
Although much progress has been made to clean up our waterways, there is still room for improvement. We should make sure we all do our part – keep your storm water permit current, follow your storm water pollution prevention plan, maintain a clean facility, and ask for help when you need it.
