CLEAN WATER ACT VIOLATION
Two criminal misdemeanor charges have been filed against a Louisiana paper mill that was recently purchased by Memphis-based International Paper. The charges are related to an August 2011 release of black liquor into the Pearl River violating the Clean Water Act. The unexpected spill suffocated more than 160,000 fish along 45 miles of the river. The company faces charges of violating the Clean Water Act and the Refuge Act but have already paid penalties to Louisiana and Mississippi. You can find out more details in this Daily News article.
