POLLUTION VS. JOBS
The EPA and their upcoming tightening of environmental standards which will require industries to meet new limits for clean air have recently been in the news. While President Obama is supporting the EPA, many lawmakers are critical of the new rules. Many believe the standards will result in jobs lost when businesses cannot afford to upgrade their facilities. Environmental activists claim that more stringent rules actually will create jobs as new processes are needed to meet the requirements.
The EPA is charged with updating pollution standards every 5 years. As technology to fight pollution improves, the standards are revised. It is all for the benefit of the public health. Cleaner air helps us all breathe easier and live longer.
During his address last week, President Obama stated, “I reject the idea that we need to ask people to choose between their jobs and their safety. I reject the argument that says for the economy to grow, we have to roll back protections that ban hidden fees by credit card companies, or rules that keep our kids from being exposed to mercury… We shouldn’t be in a race to the bottom, where we try to offer the cheapest labor and the worst pollution standards. America should be in a race to the top.”
We should be able to improve the quality of our air and maintain our industries. We hope it’s possible. We like the idea of a race to the top!
