TOP 20 TOXIC STATES
Tennessee was included on the list of the Top 20 Toxic States by the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC) again this year. This is the second year that the NRDC has published a report addressing toxic air pollution within the United States. This year's data is based on 2010 emissions and ranks Tennessee as the 11th worst state for exposing residents to "toxic air pollution from coal-fired power plants." This is an increase in toxicity ranking from last year's 15th place.
Our state produced over 26 million pounds of toxic air pollution. 36% of that pollution is produced by generation of electricity within Tennessee. Other contributors to the air pollution include chemicals, paper products, plastics, rubber and transportation equipment.
